The Second Congregational Church in Newcastle was organized in 1843 to serve both the Damariscotta and Newcastle communities. The First Congregational Church had been established in the village of Sheepscot, so a new church was needed on the Damariscotta, or eastern side of Newcastle. The sanctuary portion of the church's current building, erected on the banks of the Damariscotta River, was dedicated in 1849. In 1979 it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The church's sanctuary houses the Hatchlings-Votey tracker pipe organ was built in 1902 and rebuilt in 1979. It features 945 pipes, 16 ranks and 13 stops.
