Docked at the Maine Maritime Academy waterfront, this 499-foot training ship for academy students is also known by its former identity as the USNS Tanner, which originally served as a Navy hydrographic survey vessel. A recent conversion process removed underwater sonar domes and equipment; the two original engines were removed and a new 'unique' power plant was installed, completing the vessel's transformation into a sophisticated high-tech teaching platform for training licensed officers in the Merchant Marine. Guided tours are offered Sunday to Friday afternoons, and throughout the day on Saturday. Call ahead to verify availability; schedule may vary due to training practices.
