Waterville

Waterville is located just northeast of Augusta between Augusta and Newport, along Interstate 95. It is situated on the banks of the Kennebec River near the North and Great ponds.

First settled by 11 families at Fort Halifax in 1754, the area grew because the fort ensured protection from attack and the rivers offered fish and power.

Today, the Hathaway shirt and Chinet plate are well-known examples of items produced locally. Tourism is a vital part of the area's economy.

The greater Waterville area is the home of several four-year and technical colleges.
