Huron-Manistee National Forests

The Huron-Manistee National Forests, in the lower peninsula of Michigan, were originally two forests created from abandoned farms and timberland.

The forests contain approximately 976,052 acres of woodland, including more than 5,000 acres of wetlands. The forests are renowned for birdwatching, fishing, the River Road Scenic Byway, hiking, canoeing, the Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness and the Loda Lake Wildflower Sanctuary, as well as many sandy beaches. The birds include shorebirds, gulls, eagles, ducks, hawks, herons, vireos, Kirkland warbler, meadowlarks, loons, osprey, eagles and rails. The Huron forest has 17 campgrounds with 270 campsites and the Manistee forest has 21 campgrounds with more than 400 sites. You can camp in the wilderness except where posted.
