Richland is in
Kalamazoo, and in the
West-Southwest Region. This community is located just northeast of
Kalamazoo between
Battle Creek and
Plainwell along Highway 89 near Gull Lake. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 532, an increase of 67 since 1990.
Richland is part of the Kalamazoo-Battle Creek, Michigan metro area.
Richland was named for its proximity to the beautiful Gull Lake, located two miles to the northeast. It was first platted as Gull Corners by Willard and Sylvester Mills in 1833. In 1840, it was given a post office and re-named Richland.
Richland is rich with Early American classical design, with a park as the central town square surrounded by businesses, a church and public library. Along with the agricultural and local small business, it contains some average sized production facilities, including office furniture manufacturing.
