The Episcopal Cathedral is the first Cathedral edifice constructed in the American Episcopal Church. Between 1862 and 1869 the Rt. Rev. Henry Benjamin Whipple put stone, wood, and glass into place to fulfill his vision of a missionary church for the chief pastor of the Episcopal Diocese. His tomb is in the crypt beneath the high altar. Bishop Whipple's push for justice and dignity for the Native American Community of Dakota and Ojjbwe people is honored in the Cathedral's windows, the icon of the first Native American ordained in the Episcopal Church, and in the lore and legend of the Cathedral's history. A carillon of bells hung in the tower is the bishop's memorial from grateful contributors throughout the world.
