Hull-Rust Mahoning Mine |
Hibbing is the site of the world's biggest open pit iron ore mine, the Hull Rust or Hull Rust Mahoning Mine. The making of the Hull Rust group of open pit mines stands as a monument to the integrity - and just plain hard work - of man. Earth removed to create the mammoth open pit is said to be the equivalent of digging a small tunnel from Minnesota through the center of the earth and out the other side. Since ore shipping began in 1895, more than 1.4 billion tons of earth has been removed to form this "Man-Made Grand Canyon of the North." The Mahoning Mine was the first "strip mine" or open pit mine on the Mesabi Iron Range and shipped its first train of ore in 1895 over the Duluth, Mississippi River and Northern Logging Railroad to Swan River, where it connected with the Duluth and Winnipeg line leading to ore shipping docks in Superior, Wisconsin.
