The center interprets the period in history surrounding the 1851 treaty between the US government and the Dakota Indians in which 24 million acres in Minnesota, Iowa and South Dakota were ceded by the American Indians. Three rooms examine the lives of the Dakota people and adventures from the early 1800s. An archives contains county memorabilia and genealogy information. A commemorative Traverse des Sioux encampment takes place in early September and re-creates an 1850s village depicting the crafts, skills and culture of the era complete with dancing, food and demonstrations.
