USM, one of Mississippi's largest institutions of higher learning, was founded in 1910 as a state-supported Normal College, with the purpose of training teachers. It became a comprehensive university in 1962; the administrative structure now includes a president, provost, six vice presidents dean of Graduate School and deans of ine colleges.

The 1,090 acre wooded campus is in Hattiesburg, named Americas Most Liveable Small City by the US Conference of Mayors. The city is the educational and medical hub of south Mississippi's Pine Belt region.
