The Mississippi Museum of Art is home to some very extraordinary works of art. The museum, opened in 1978, has a permanent collection of 800 individual objects. It exhibits the work of Mississippi artists, sculptors, writers, craftsmen, and workers in other artistic fields. The collection is also notably strong in 19th and 20th century American landscape paintings, 18th century British paintings and furniture, Japanese prints, pre-Columbian ceramics and Oceanic art, photographs, and folk art.
