Marion is located in McDowell County (of which it is the county seat) east of Asheville between Linville Falls and Rutherfordton along US Highway 221 near Nebo, Old Fort, Pisgah National Forest, Lake Nebo, and Lake Tahoma.The name Marion came from Francis Marion, the South Carolina Revolutionary War hero, known as 'Swamp Fox'.
