Smithfield is located in Johnston County (of which it is the county seat) southeast of Raleigh, between Wilson and Fayetteville along Interstate 95 on the banks of the Neuse River near Selma, Four Oaks, Goldsboro, and Holts Lake. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 10,839, an increase of 659 since 1990.
