Gering is located in
Scotts Bluff County (of which it is the county seat) 28 miles NW of Bridgeport between Melbeta and Wyoming state line along Highway 71 on the banks of the
North Platte River near Wildcat Hills State Recreation Area.
Named "Gering" for Martin Gering, the city's first banker.
