Known as the Poet Laureate of Nebraska, John Neihardt lived from 1881 to 1973. The center contains personal and professional memorabilia. A sacred Hoop garden symbolizes Neihardt's interest in American Indian customs and traditions. Among the many objects on exhibit in the interpretive center are items Lakota Holy Man Black Elk gave to Neihardt over the course of their friendship, including the sacred hoop of the world, a drum, and a pipe. There is also the Neihardt Study, restored and furnished in period.
