Lyons is located in Burt County north of Fremont off of US Hwy 77, between Oakland and Bancroft; west of the Missouri River and near the Omaha Indian Reservation.
The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 1,160, an increase of 16 since 1990.
The Homestead Act was really responsible for the Lyons community. Nearly all of the pioneers or someone in their family was connected with the Civil War. The Lyon, Everett, and Fritts pioneer families were the folks responsible for starting the community. These families all came to Lyons from Wisconsin.
The first industry in Lyons was a brickyard. In 1881, Franklin Everett built a bank, the first bank in the settlement. The first railroad had reached Lyons by this time. The first school was held in a back room of Josiah Everett's farm house in the fall of 1868.
Today, this little community has a lot of outdoor recreation to offer all ages.
