Bridgewater is located in Grafton County between Plymouth and Franklin on Highway 3A near Wellington State Park, Cardigan State Park and Newfound Lake with its 22 miles of shoreline.

Bridgewater received its charter in 1788, when it was part of the town of New Chester. New Chester was separated into Bridgewater, Hill, Bristol, Danbury, and Wilmot. Early settlers were from Bridgewater, Massachusetts, thus giving the town its name.
