Allendale is located in Bergen County, in the Gateway Region. Allendale was part of an enormous wilderness known only to the Native American Indians until the early 1700’s, when a few settlers began to carve out farms and build homesteads in the vicinity. The town was named for Col. William C. Allen, a surveyor for the Erie Railroad, and developed after the arrival of the Paterson & Ramapo Railroad in 1848. Nearby is Old Schoolhouse Museum, Ringwood Manor, Ringwood State Park, as well as the Hermitage, a historic home visited by George Washington, Alexander Hamilton and the Marquis de Lafayette. Only five miles down the road is Ramapo College of New Jersey. Take a short trip down West Allendale Avenue and find a room in the Allendale Hotel.
