Gateway Region

Liberty State Park, the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island have their home in this region. The performing arts flourish here, with a number of theater centers and playhouses. Visual arts with an international accent are well-represented. Inventors Samuel Colt and Edison National Historic Site lived and worked here. Gardens beckon throughout the area.

A mastodon skeleton found at Hackensack is on display at the Bergen Museum of Art and Science, along with a Lenape Indian exhibit, youth gallery and science wing. Wildlife art and natural history exhibits are displayed at the Hiram Blauvelt Art Museum in Oradell. This museum advocates conservation of wildlife through art. Variety is the hallmark of the [naksunwk], which features period rooms and art galleries, the Victorian Ballantine House, sculpture garden, firefighter museum and planetarium, as well as Tibetan, American, Oriental and classic works of art.

Jersey City is home to the Circle Line Statue of Liberty Ferry. This vessel plies the waters from Liberty State Park to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Included is an interpretive center, a railroad station museum, boat launch, fishing, nature trail, playground and refreshments. Also in Jersey City is the Spirit of New Jersey, which offers cruises in New York Harbor year-round.

A National Historic Landmark District with plenty to see starts at the Great Falls Visitor's Center. Made famous by William Carlos Williams and conceived by Alexander Hamilton, the nation's first planned industrial center is here, replete with two centuries of industrial history. Items include locomotives, the first practical submarine, textiles and the Colt revolver.
