Amsterdam is located in Montgomery County 15 miles NW of Schenectady between Fort Johnson and Cranesville along Highway 5 on the banks of the Mohawk River near the Erie Canal. It was named after the city in the Netherlands and grew quickly after the completion of the canal in 1825. Amsterdam is part of the Albany-Schenectady-Troy, New York metro area.
