Batavia is located in Genessee County 30 miles E of Buffalo between E Pembroke and Stafford along Highway 5 off I90 on the banks of the Tonawanda River near Darein Lakes State Park. It is in the Western Region of the state. Named for the Netherlands origin of the original settlers Center of the Holland Land Purchase, the large western New York tract was acquired in the late 18th century by Dutch capitalists.

Batavia is part of the Rochester, New York metro area.
