Elizabethtown is located in
Essex County and in the
Northern Region of the state; it is 42 miles south of Plattesburg between Keene and Westport on the banks of the Boquet River. One of the most picturesque drives in northern
New York is US 9, which extends through the Boquet River Valley to the south.
Named after Elizabeth Gilliland, wife of landholder William Gilliland. Tourism replaced lumber as the chief industry in the late 1800s.
