Kinderhook is located in
Columbia County between Stuyvesant and Valatie along Highway 9 int the
Southern Region of the state. This small community is located south of
Albany on the east side of the
Hudson River. It is best known as the birthplace of
Martin Van Buren.
Its name derives from Dutch for "children's point". Characters in Washington Irving's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" were patterned after local residents; students here attend the Ichabod Crane High School and their mascot is a headless horseman.
