Maumee State Forest

Search Swanton Ohio

The Maumee State Forest contains more than 3,000 acres and is located in northwestern Ohio in eastern Fulton County about 20 miles southwest of Toledo.

Ongoing research projects in the forest include the "Progeny Test Site" which evaluates genetic selections of various species of trees for superior characteristics. The superior trees will then be grafted into orchards where their seed will be collected and grown in state tree nurseries. These improved seedlings will then be sold to Ohioans for reforestation purposes. In addition, the Windbreak Arboretum, which was established in 1990, is an area set aside for the purpose of evaluating tree and shrub species for their suitability for use in windbreaks.

The facility is open to visitors between the hours of 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. daily. Hunting, horseback riding, snowmobiles, motorcycles and mountain bikes are permitted in season and in specified areas. Berries, nuts and mushrooms may be gathered and removed.
