Meigs county is located on the banks of the
Ohio River in southeastern Ohio and uses Pomeroy as its county seat. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 24,012, an increase of 1,025 over the 1990 census.
One historically significant site in the county is Buffington Island, site of the only important Civil War battle that took place on Ohio soil. The site is near Pomeroy and is not an island. Other sites include the Meigs County Fairgrounds, Grandstand and Racetrack in Rock Springs.
Outdoor recreation can be found at Forked Run Lake (which is part of the Shade River State Forest) in the northeastern section of the county. Other options include Leading Creek which flows from the northwest and empties into the Ohio River just southwest of Pomeroy.
