Pike County |
Pike county is located in southern Ohio (one county removed from the Ohio River and calls Waverly its county seat. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 27,988, an increase of 3,739 over the 1990 census.
The county was founded 1815 from portions of Scioto, Ross and Adams counties and is named in honor of Zebulon Montgomery Pike, the famous explorer of the upper Mississippi River shortly after the Louisiana Purchase was completed.
For outdoor lovers, the [waynenf], which takes up the eastern third of the county, offers scattered formal facilities. In addition, Pike State Forest is located in the northwest quadrant. The Scioto River, Lake White and Pike Lake offer a variety of water-related sports.
Among the historically significant sites in the county are the Eager Inn near Morgantown, the Waverly Canal Historic District and the Piketon Mounds just outside the city limits.
