Tuscarawas county is located in eastern Ohio naming New Philadelphia as its county seat. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 88,773, an increase of 4,683 over the 1990 census.

The name Tuscarawas, like a great many geographical names of our country, is one of Indian origin. The Tuscaroras Nation of North Carolina migrated northward in 1711 and became a part of "the Confederation", also known as "the Six Nations." A faction of this tribe subsequently migrated westward claiming the local area as their hunting grounds.
