Brown county is located in southwestern Ohio on the banks of the Ohio River with Georgetown serving as the county seat. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 41,576, an increase of 6,610 over the 1990 census.

Significant towns include Mt. Orab about 10 miles north of Georgetown and St. Martin, home to Chatfield College, in the extreme north of the county.
