Williams County

Williams county is the state's northwesternmost and calls Bryan its county seat. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 37,755, an increase of 799 over the 1990 census.

The county, created in 1820, is named in honor of David Williams, a Revolutionary War hero. Williams, along with John Paulding and Isaac Van Wert, helped arrest Maj. John Andre, an accomplice of Benedict Arnold, for his part in the plot to hand over the fort at West Point, New York to the British in 1780.

The quality of the water near Bryan in the early 19th century led to the construction of a great number of fountains--so many in fact that they drew down the water table making the fountains useless. It did retain the nickname "Fountain City", however.

Historic sites around the county include the Kunkle Log House near Kunkle, the Nettle Lake Mound Group near Nettle Lake and the Williams County Courthouse in Bryan.
