Okeene is located in northwestern Oklahoma in northeastern
Blaine County about 5 miles southwest of the
Cimarron River at the intersection of SRs 8 and 51. Outdoor recreation can be enjoyed at
Roman Nose State Park about 20 miles south-southwest of town and
Canton Lake, about 15 miles due west.
The town was established during the Land Run of 1892 and was named from the "O" of Oklahoma, the "kee" from Cherokee and the "ne" from Cheyenne. Okeene claims to have created the first "Rattlesnake Roundup" circa 1940.
The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 1,200, a decrease of 143 since 1990.
