Craig county, created in 1907 and named for Granville Craig, a prominent Cherokee, is located in northeastern Oklahoma on the Kansas border and names Vinita as its county seat.
Although abutting counties with major lakes, rivers and state parks, Craig county, other than a brief brush with the Grand (Neosho) River in the northeast section, is devoid of significant bodies of water. The nearest state park is Disney/Little Blue State Park in northeast Mayes County. The Grand Lake O' the Cherokees is to the east in Delaware County.
Historic Route 66 passes through the southeast section of the county. In addition, Spraker Service Station, Randall Tire Company and the the Craig County Courthouse, all in Vinita, are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
