Mayes county, home to the first white settlement in what was to become Oklahoma, is located in northeastern Oklahoma with Pryor serving as the county seat. Christian missions began showing up circa 1820 in the vicinity of the Chouteau Trading Post which was established in 1796 by Major Jean Pierre Chouteau, an Osage Indian trader and agent.This picturesque county teems with recreational opportunities. The Grand (Neosho) River flows into the county at its northeast corner flowing southwesterly spawning two state parks, Disney/Little Blue State Park and Snowdale State Park, along the way. Two other parks, Spavinaw State Park on Spavinaw Lake and Cherokee State Park, offer visitors activities ranging from camping to fishing to horseshoes. Lake Hudson completes the natural features picture of the county. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 38,270, an increase of 4,904 over the 1990 census.
