The Rogue River National Forest consists of two separate units of land. The west of the Forest includes the headwaters of the Applegate River within the Siskiyou Mountains. This area experienced a gold rush during the 1850's. To the east, the Forest includes the upper reaches of the
Rogue River in the younger Cascade Range.
For recreation, the Forest provides opportunities in hiking, swimming, fishing, as well as skiing. There are some 40 developed campgrounds and picnic areas, as well as about 400 miles of trails for hiking and horseback riding. The Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail traverses the Forest from north to south.
