Union County, established in October of 1864, has 2,038 square miles and has a population 24,500. The county seat and largest city is La Grande. Elgin is on Highway 82 on the way to Enterprise and the Wallowa Mountains.
There are several smaller communities besides La Grande in Union County, each with their own character and friendly atmosphere. Island City is adjacent to La Grande and is home to the La Grande Country Club with an attractive 9 hole golf course. Imbler and Elgin are located on Highway 82, the route to the Wallowa Valley and Wallowa. Visitors can access beautiful nearby camping, rafting, skiing and baking from these communities. The town of Union, to the southeast of La Grande, has a Historic District, the Union Hotel, many small businesses, and a the wonderful Union County Museum. North Powder, Union County's southernmost community is the gateway to Anthony Lakes Ski Resort and Recreation Area high in the Elkhorn Ridge of the Blue Mountains.
