The county seat of Marion County and capitol city of Oregon is Salem. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 272,760, an increase of 44,277 over the 1990 census. Over 250,000 people live in the 1,194 square miles that make up Marion County. This area, at the northern end of the Willamette Valley, was settled even before the Oregon Trail opened Oregon to large scale settlement.
