The county seat of Benton County, Oregon, is Corvallis. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 77,192, an increase of 6,381 over the 1990 census. The county seat is well named. Taken from Latin, the name means "heart of the valley," and Benton County, as well as Corvallis, is in the heart of the Willamette Valley. Highway 20 connects Benton County with the Oregon Coast and Highway 99W joins the county to other points north and south.
