Fort Watson

Search Santee South Carolina

Colonel Lee, the Virgina cavalry and General Marion laid siege to this British-held Fort Watson to get supplies in 1781. Gen. Thomas Sumter had attacked Fort Watson unsuccessfully earlier. While waiting for a cannon to arrive, Major Maham suggested building a tower and having sharpshooters pick off the Redcoats inside the fort. The use of the tower led to the capture of Fort Watson on April 23rd. It was the final Battle of Fort Watson. The scene and sites of the towers are on view.
