Hilton Head Island is located in Beaufort County just northeast of the Georgia state line between Daufuskie Island and St. Phillips Island along Highway 278 near the Intracoastal Waterway. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 8,277, an increase of 95 since 1990.
Hilton Head Island is famous for its beaches. Hilton Head Islands official beach season is April 1st through September 30th of each year. All of the beach is public, from the ocean to the high water mark. Access to the beach, however, is often private. The Town of Hilton Head Island provides five beach accesses: Alder Lane Beach Access, off South Forest Beach Drive; Coligny Beach Park, off Coligny Circle; Driessen Beach Park, at the end of Bradley Beach Road; Folly Field Beach Park, off Folly Field Road; and Islanders Beach Park off Folly Field Road.
