The tunnel began as a project of the Blue Ridge Railroad Company, in an effort to connect the area's railway to the railway in Knoxville, Tennessee. The small town hosts an Octoberfest every year. The Oktoberfest has been a Walhalla tradition since 1979. There is also a Walhalla, North Dakota.
