Walnut Grove |
Walnut Grove Plantation is a "living history" lesson. Walnut Grove Plantation was deeded to Charles Moore by King George III when Spartanburg County was uncharted and uncivilized country. Charles and his wife Mary took care of the property. A scarce 13 years later, their children were a part of the Revolutionary War as young Americans: Margaret Kate Moore, local war hero, General Thomas Moore, and Andrew Moore, the area's first physician. The Battle of Cowpens occurred a mere 25 miles up the road from the house.
Today, the plantation contains almost all of what was original: the two-story, clapboard over log home, the wheat house, the meat house, the blacksmith's forge, and the horse barn. On top of the barn is the cannon weather vane and underneath the barn is the Moravian-built conestoga wagon. The house is open Tuesday-Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., April-October; and Sunday from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., year-round.
