The museum hosts both long- and short-term exhibits interpreting the Dakotah Midlands prairie, the lifestyles and lives of early settlers, the railroad's influence on the settlement, and Native American culture. Featured are the Hatterscheidt Wildlife Gallery on the first floor, where over 55 mounted specimens from various continents are displayed adjacent to an excellent firearms collection. The second-floor Lamont Gallery hosts the work of local and regional artists and art shows. The museum, a recent recipient of the Governor's Award for History, is housed in the historic circa 1889 Romanesque Revival-design Northwestern National Bank building, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Closed Mondays and major holidays. Admission by donation.
