St. Joseph's Indian School |
This establishment has served as a residence school and mission for needy Lakota Sioux children since 1927; currently over 200 students are enrolled at the facility, with a waiting list. The on-site Our Lady of the Sioux Chapel features stained glass windows depicting the Sacred Rites of the Sioux and the activities of the local Catholic Church.
The school also operates the Akta Lakota Museum and Cultural Center, on the school grounds, where Sioux culture and heritage are interpreted, and historic items as well as contemporary artwork of various American Indian tribes are displayed. The museum is open to the public year-round, and visitors to the school are welcome.
