Gunnison Civic Library

Gunnison Civic Library, serving an area of 3,600 residents, has a collection of 12,000 books and periodicals; in addition, there are 800 CDs, records, cassettes and other audio materials, as well as 400 video items, such as DVDs and VHS tapes. Internet terminals are available for use by the general public.

Staffing consists of one employee, plus volunteers. Annual expenditures on the library collection total $8,400. Patrons make 10,000 visits annually, and check out materials 24,000 times. Twenty-eight percent of all check-outs are children's materials.

Comments: Gunnison's library is about the size you would expect, since it shares roof space with the police station, mayor's office, etc.. But for a small town, it has the needed books to merit a visit or two. Mostly, this one-room area serves to house materials that are great for the first few readings, but not worth space in a personal collection, with a light necessary mixture of dog-eared classics which mostly haven't been checked out in the past ten years. But be warned; they charge a dollar for a one-week movie check-out. On the whole, this library is friendly, and could be a lot worse.
