The almost 100,000-acre forest makes a rough semi-circle around
Provo Utah and southeast of the
Timpanogos Cave National Monument.
The tallest mountain in the Wasatch Range is located within the forest; 11,750-foot Mount Timpanogos lies northwest of Timpanogos Cave National Monument. Three wilderness areas include Lone Peak, Timpanogos to the north, and Nebo to the south, as well as various scenic drives are encompassed within the forest. Swimming and fishing are permitted at Payson Lakes and Blackhawk recreation areas; Mount Nebo Recreation Area is located ten miles from Nephi, in the left fork of Salt Creek Canyon. Strawberry Reservoir Recreation Area lies 23 miles south of Heber City and is known for its trout fishing and sailing; a marina and camping facilities are featured. Sightseeing is highlighted along the Nebo Scenic Byway, taking in 32 miles with overlooks of surrounding valleys.
