Fairy Stone State Park

Search Stuart Virginia

The rare staurolite stones, known as, "Fairy Stones", are found elsewhere but not in such abundance and shaped so nearly like crosses as in the vicinity of Fairy Stone State Park. As the legend would have it there were many fairies dancing around a spring of water when an elfin messenger arrived with news of the death of Christ. When the fairies heard the story of the cruifixion, they wept. As their tears fell to the earth, they crystallized to form beautiful crosses. The stones are most commonly shaped like St. Andrew's and Roman crosses. The most sought after are those in the shape of the Maltese cross.

The park has a lodge, cabins and campiing areas as well.
