Overcoming social obstacles of her time -- being physically impaired, black and female -- Walker founded the St Luke Penny Savings Bank, the first chartered bank in the country started by a woman. Her home, adjoining the visitor center, has been restored with many original furnishings to its 1930s appearance. The visitor center offers a film presentation.
