Maggie L Walker National Historic Site

Honors Maggie L Walker, a prominent businesswoman. Overcoming social obstacles of her time -- being physically impaired, black and female -- Walker founded the St Luke Penny Savings Bank, the first chartered bank in the country started by a woman. Her home, adjoining the visitor center, has been restored with many original furnishings to its 1930s appearance. The visitor center offers a film presentation. Tours are available every half-hour, Wednesday-Sunday 9am-5pm; closed New Year's Day and Christmas Day. Admission is free to the public.
