The property has been owned by two US presidents. President William Henry Harrison inherited the historic plantation in the late 1700s, and President John Tyler bought the estate in 1842. Sherwood Forest served as Tyler's home 1842-62 and is still inhabited by his descendants. The 1730 mansion has been restored and is furnished with family pieces. At 301 feet in length, it is said to be the longest frame house in the country. The guided tour includes the formal rooms of the home, including the 68-foot-long ballroom. A self-guided tour takes in the grounds, picnicking is permitted. Open daily 9-5.
