St John's Episcopal Church

The church was erected in 1741. Patrick Henry delivered his famous 'Liberty of Death' speech in favor of independence at this site. The Second Virginia convention is re-enacted Sunday at 2pm, Memorial Day through Labor Day. The surrounding burial ground contains the graves of George Wythe, the first Virginia signer of the Declaration of Independence, and Elizabeth Arnold Poe, mother of Edgar Allen Poe. Guided tours are offered; call for hours of operation; closed major holidays.
