The central part was completed about 1788 and the wings were added in 1906. The statue of
George Washington by Jean Antoine Houdon stands in the rotunda. This was the only statue for which he posed. The hidden inner dome is seen only from inside the building, as well as the busts of the eight Virginia-born presidents. In the central part of the capitol are the Old Senate Hall and the Old Hall of the House of Delegates.
