On the border with Canada, Sumas is on the very northern edge of
Whatcom County. Sumas is derived from the Cowichan Indian word meaning "land without trees" - in reference to the prairie-like country which surrounds the bustling town.
There is a 24-hour customs station at the border crossing here, which is close to Abbotsford BC.
