The central fact of Pierce County is the city of Tacoma, the second most important in the state. The city is at the northern edge of the county, so some of its suburbs are actually in King County.
In the east, the skyline is dominated by Mount Rainier, whose summit is within the county borders. The western part of the county is the was once very rural and isolated, but has grown since the Tacoma Narrows Bridge was built. The main westside city is Gig Harbor.
